BULGARIA - BALKAN MOUNTAINS - This warm and friendly culturally-rich nation is throwing its arms open to the tourists of the west - get there before the hoi polloi. Fine horses, stunning landscape in a country with 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The progressive Mountain Ride requires a little stoicism by night, while the one-base Elen Ride has more frills, though perhaps not in the best possible taste…

SPAIN - SIERRA NEVADA - Immaculately schooled and gentle horses, great for experienced rider to the confident novice. A progressive route high in the hills means plenty of saddle hours and occasional walking when the gradient kicks in so you need to be fit. Meeting in Malaga so plenty of different flight options.

ECUADOR - COLONIAL HACIENDA RIDE - A ride in two distinct areas of the Andean highlands. Tread ancient Inca highways and Spanish colonial routes, staying at haciendas which have hosted the likes of Simon Bolivar (the South American liberator) and scientist von Humboldt (who has an ocean current, a penguin, a skunk and a lunar sea named in his honour!) Fantastic riding on well schooled horses and comfortable accommodation in historical haciendas - perfecto!

MOROCCO, ROYAL CITIES RIDE - Fabulous for fit riders who like to push on. Lithe Arab horses (stallions included), lengthy saddle hours - you need to be happy riding for 3 or 4 hour stretches, up to 6 or 7 hours a day. No-frills camping. A dash of the exotic and only a short haul flight.
