Other Ideas & Special Rides

As well as the standard riding trips featured in this brochure we have several other riding options that might suit those with a particular interest and we will also once again, be offering several special rides in 2009. Some of these are with dedicated trip leaders meaning that not only will you benefit from the experience and knowledge of your local guide, but you will have the advantage of travelling with a private group of like-minded riders under the careful guidance of a well travelled and entertaining host.

Classical Riding in Andalucia
Hacienda Dos Olivos is a small, typically Andalucian Hacienda just south of Seville in southern Spain. It is owned by Johanna Beattie, an English lady who trained at the Royal School of Equestrian Art in Jerez and who offers instruction in Classical Riding on pure-bred Andalucian horses. Stays at Dos Olivos are organised on request and are generally for a week. They can include a combination of lessons, hacking from a neighbouring stable, visits to the Royal School in Jerez and to a local Andalucian stud. Contact us for further details.

Santa Cristina in Tuscany - This lovely castle in Tuscany is a wonderful base for riding and options can be very flexible. Anything from a few days to a week can be arranged and rides each day can take you to the surrounding fortified towns of Sorano and Onano and to Lake Bolsena. You can ride as much as you like, take dressage lessons with the very qualified Heidi - or you can relax by the pool, play tennis and even have cooking lessons! A perfect place for families - there are children's ponies and a private apartment with its own pool. A magical place in the heart of Italy. Contact us for more information.

Portugal - Yoga and Riding on the Atlantic Coast - a refreshing ‘hippotherapy’ week. Start and / or end each day with an invigorating yoga class. Ride coastal tracks, canter through cork forest or simply paddle in the Atlantic waves. Fresh rustic food cooked in a beachside restaurant, cosy self-contained apartments on the family farm and delightful light-in-the-hand Lusitano and Lusitano-cross horses. Perfectly timed for end of school holiday recovery.
12th to 19th September 2009

Ethiopian Highlands
Ethiopia, with its myths and cultures, has captured the hearts of many travellers, including that great adventurer Wilfred Thesiger whose book 'The Danakil Diaries' is a wonderful insight to the country. It is one of the only African countries never colonised by the west, a remote land with arcane religious practises and strange tribes. We have two recce rides planned for the autumn / winter, riding from the stables just outside Addis Ababa and heading north to the Blue Nile Gorge. The route takes you through the highlands inhabited by the Oromo tribe, a people of the horse to this day, and the horses used are local breeds - the famed Abyssinian ponies renowned for their polo playing abilities. The rides are run by Yves Stranger, who originally from Guernsey, has lived in Ethiopia for six years and speaks fluent Amharic (the national language).

Tour Leaders and Trip Dates:

Tristan Voorspuy - Anyone who has ridden with Tristan Voorspuy of Offbeat Safaris knows what a superb guide he is and how much he can add to any trip with his knowledge of the bush, the game, the birds, and also Kenya's political and economic climate. For 2009 Tristan will be leading a special safari for Ride World Wide following a route along the Tanzanian border to Amboseli and on to southern Kenya’s Chyulu Hills. Please contact us for dates.

Richard Dunwoody MBE - For the past 5 years Richard Dunwoody, champion jockey from 1992 to 1995 and record holder of over 1699 winners in Britain alone, has been escorting rides to Kyrgyzstan. For 2010 we hope to find a new venue to entice him. Richard is an excellent trip leader - approachable, fun and always full of interesting stories.

Jakob von Plesson - Currently working for Offbeat Safaris as a riding safari guide in Kenya, Jakob will be taking private group special escorted rides in Argentina from 8th to 18th January & 22nd January to 1st February 2010. Jan Schovsbo - The Schovsbo family have been running horse safaris from their family farm close to Mount Meru in Tanzania for many years. With close relatives in Argentina, they have also taken many private groups to ride in South America. Jan has several exciting rides planned there for 2009 including the Southern Cross Ride which explores some of the more remote valleys in Patagonia and the Austral Expedition which crosses from Argentina into Chile. Contact us for dates and itineraries.

Nigel Harvey - Nigel is a founder and director of Ride World Wide. He is also an avid traveller and experienced horseman with a passion for South America where he lived for several years working on Estancias in both Chile and Argentina, from Tierra del Fuego to the province of Corrientes. During this time he spent three months riding through Patagonia, crossing from Chile to Argentina and back and organised many riding trips into the Andes in his spare time. He aims to return to Chile each year to ride with the Huasos (Chilean cowboys) who are now old friends.
