The following are a selection of comments received on rides - these are all taken from Questionnaires we send to clients on return from their holiday. Our questionnaires ask clients to rate various aspects of their trip ("Very Good', 'Good', 'Fair' or 'Poor') and also provide space for any additional comments. "The lunches were excellent and fresh fruit for aperitivos was very welcome. The dinners depended on the accommodation and I would have preferred some plainer food options. Overall nothing was too much trouble for Maria Elena or Emilio and the two girls were very helpful in taking care of the horses when we slid off!"

Spain - Sierra Nevada

"Had yet another brilliant holiday in Spain. Dallas and her brother are excellent hosts – very organized. Stunning mountain riding – last day was the best – we rode up to 7,800 feet and it felt like the top of the world. It literally took your breath away. Excellent horses – Adra was very well schooled and forward going. She climbed mountains like a steam train. Would like to return one day and rate it as good as the Gredos which I thought could not be beaten"

"I had a fantastic time – Dallas put me on a brilliant horse – Polly. She has an uncanny knack of matching horses and people which is almost spooky! I think we were surprised to be cantering on such hard ground but that is just an English thing. The horses are used to it and so are their legs. Some comments have been made about the amount of getting on and off – not our group though! I know you mention it in the itinerary and any fit and competent rider should be able to cope. I didn’t have a problem at all – in fact it did me good. The correct footwear is therefore essential as not all riding boots are comfortable to walk in for long periods. I would dearly love to do it again perhaps in the spring for variety"

Can Jou (Mountains to the Sea Ride)
"We had already done two trail rides and comparatively this was a 'hard core' trail ride. Fast and long over different terrain; not much time to recuperate between days. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. It was a real adrenalin rush and the horses were high quality and v. well schooled. Mick and his team were like a well-oiled machine. It was nice to have to do the horses ourselves and to build up a rapport"

Can Jou (Mediterranean Coast Ride)
"This was my fourth week at Can Jou which speaks for itself. One of the other riders said they had heard this was one of the best trails in Europe at the moment and I would agree. I am vegetarian and Mick and Birgit took great trouble to ensure I had a variety of food throughout the week. My horse was fantastic – I couldn’t have asked for a better one."

Even on the slower days there were always several – often quite long and fast – canters, and on one day in the middle (50kms plus in 4-5 hours riding) they came one after another – great fun. "The hotel on the first night of the trail is disappointing particularly compared to the excellence of the others – Mick is aware of the issue. The ride was extremely well organized and run. The scenery was something of a revelation ranging from the pretty to the truly spectacular. The horses were fun and extremely impressive over what was often incredibly rough terrain. There were also a good number of opportunities for some faster riding given that it was a mountain ride. The only 'problem' was that some other riders did not appreciate the nature of mountain riding – ie that you cannot canter all the time and that you need to be in reasonable shape to really appreciate the experience. But overall it was very enjoyable and I would definitely ride with Can Jou again."

"Wow! What a trail!!
If you are a confident rider with a sense of adventure this is definitely the ride for you.
I was amazed at the terrain covered during the 6 day trail- winding mountain roads, volcanic paths, "jungle" trails and occasional "extreme" riding up and down woodland tracks. The scenery throughout was breathtaking and, even though it was misty, the climb up to the summit of Cabrera (the highest mountain on the trail) was well worth the effort.

While there were plenty of opportunities to sit back and enjoy the ride some physical effort was required on the part of the rider. Every morning we groomed and tacked up our own horses and at times had to dismount and lead our horses, down narrow paths. The horse I rode (Olga) suited my ability and requirements (as discussed on the Sunday with Mick) brilliantly I could not fail to be impressed by the whole set up at Can Jou and the horses "accommodation" on the nights they were away with us.

The riders accommodation at Can Jou and the other hotels en route is beautiful. There was no chance of going hungry as the food and wine throughout was plentiful and very tasty. On some days we carried our own picnic (complete with chocolate and wine) but the real treat was the cooked on site lunches provided by our wonderful driver Miquel! Every day our guide made it clear what was expected and looked after us well for the week.

France - Dordogne

"This is an excellent holiday and was most enjoyable in all respects. The arrangements are well planned and executed. Michel is a very friendly host and quickly puts you at your ease. The quality of the hotel accommodation was excellent with a nice blend of small country hotels and a couple of bigger ones. The food was excellent throughout the trip. The picnic lunches done by Colleen are most enjoyable and she works very hard to make sure everyone is content. The quality of the horses was excellent with no problems at all in riding them. They know their job and generally look after you on the steep inclines and drops. This holiday probably undersells itself in a couple of respects. On the surface it looks expensive however with everything thrown in including visits to villages, chateaux, transport between drop offs, the visit to the crystal cave and the wine tasting at the vineyard, it is overall good value for money. Additionally the quality of the food was better than I expected. You could sell this holiday as a gastronomic tour on horseback without stretching the point too much! The quality of the countryside is breathtaking. The almost deserted woods, the wide sweeps of farmland, the winding hills and valleys contribute to a very relaxing, tranquil holiday. There is a fair amount of riding and you need to be a fit rider to get the best out of it. The content of each day has been well thought out with riders being built up gradually to harder days as the holiday progresses. Most of the ride is at a walk with occasional long trots and canters. This is less of a disadvantage than you might think because the temperature is very warm and a lot of the ground does not allow for fast progress. Additionally it gives you more time to appreciate the scenery. Thankfully there is not that much road work and even that is usually on country roads with little or no traffic."

"Michel and his assistants Beatrice and Texas were wonderful. We went hoping for some great riding and never really gave the accommodation a thought, clearly Michele had, his choice of auberges and hotels was fantastic each one different in its own way. Some more comfortable than others but each with their own character (& fabulous swimming pools). The food was of course sublime. Beatrice produced varied & delicious picnics and Michel arranged great local & specialty dishes with the demi-pension hotels. I am quite sure we will want to return in the future and can highly recommend his tour. Of course I have written this without mentioning the most important bit: we loved the riding and were not disappointed. The trail gave us different vistas and the pace of the riding gradually increased over the week which suited out level of relative inexperience very well. The horses behaved impeccably even when their riders did not!"

We rode a number of different horses and liked them all, although we had to admit to favourites by the end of the week. Polocrosse was a challenge, Western games were fun and the cattle mustering needed perseverance to find the cattle to muster. However the highlight as far as we were concerned was riding in the game reserves at Horizon and Born Wild with giraffe, zebra, impala and wildebeest only a few yards away. Being on horseback made us feel we were part of their environment rather than just observers – a fantastic feeling. Everyone at Horizon made us very welcome and the group we were with were great fun. "The Manu trip and riding with Eduard all went off without a hitch and it was so much better than we could have ever expected. The riding was spectacular and the horses very well trained. Even though it was the first ride of the season, the horses were fit and ready for the challenge. All the staff, without exception, were first rate. Food, although being too much at times, was very good. It was a good idea to go to Manu first to get somewhat used to the altitude as some people flew right in for the ride and had some trouble adjusting. I told Eddie that I can sometimes be a bit nervous on a new horse, but he would not let me get by with that! He said I rode much better than I thought and he put me on a stallion. One of the best trained horses, so willing and yet listened to what I wanted. What a wonderful vacation. We are already checking out some of the other rides for the future. Thank you so much again for all your work in arranging most of the travel plans"
